Botanical Names: How to Know Which Plant You Actually Have
The label says:
Chamomile
That sounds reassuringly specific.
It may refer to:
- German chamomile
- Roman chamomile
- another plant locally called chamomile
- a blend of several species
- a product using only essential oil
- a product containing flower extract
- a tea containing very little chamomile at all
Now the label says:
Matricaria
Better.
But still not complete.
A genus can contain several species.
Now it says:
Matricaria chamomilla
We have reached a species name.
Then another book calls the same medicinal plant:
Matricaria recutita
A third says:
Chamomilla recutita
The beginner closes the books and begins considering a less complicated hobby, possibly astrophysics.
This apparent confusion has a structure.
Once we understand that structure, botanical names become less like Latin punishment and more like useful plant coordinates.
A Name Is a Reference Tool
The purpose of a botanical name is not to make ordinary people feel underqualified.
It is to reduce ambiguity.
Common names change between:
- languages
- countries
- regions
- families
- historical periods
- herbal traditions
- commercial markets
The same common name may refer to several species.
One species may have dozens of common names.
A standardized scientific name allows botanists, herbalists, growers, researchers and suppliers in different places to establish which plant they are discussing.
The current international rules governing scientific names for algae, fungi and plants are contained in the International Code of Nomenclature, currently the Madrid Code published in 2025. The Code governs how names are validly published and applied; it does not freeze scientific understanding permanently or prevent taxonomists from disagreeing about classification.
A botanical name does not tell us everything about a plant.
It gives us a stable point from which to begin asking better questions.
Are They Really Latin Names?
People commonly call them Latin names.
That is close enough for ordinary conversation, but slightly incomplete.
Botanical names are written in a Latinized scientific form.
Some words come directly from Latin.
Others come from:
- Greek
- geographical places
- personal names
- Indigenous words
- local plant names
- descriptive terms adapted into Latin form
The important feature is not that every word was spoken in ancient Rome.
It is that the naming system follows internationally agreed conventions.
You do not need to speak Latin to use botanical names.
You need to recognize the pieces.
The Basic Two-Part Name
A species name usually contains two main words:
Genus + specific epithet
For example:
Prunella vulgaris
The Genus
The first word is the genus:
Prunella
A genus is a group containing one or more related species.
Formatting:
- begins with a capital letter
- is written in italics
The Specific Epithet
The second word is the specific epithet:
vulgaris
Formatting:
- begins with a lowercase letter
- is written in italics
The epithet is not a complete plant name by itself.
There are many plants with epithets such as:
- officinalis
- vulgaris
- alba
- arvensis
- montana
- palustris
Saying only officinalis is like identifying someone only as “the one named Jón.”
You need the genus too.
Together
Prunella vulgaris
This complete two-part form is called a binomial.
Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently recognizes Prunella vulgaris L. as an accepted species and records its distribution across a large part of the world, including Iceland.
The Formatting Rule
Write:
Calendula officinalis
Not:
Calendula Officinalis
Not:
calendula officinalis
Not:
CALENDULA OFFICINALIS

Calendula-officinalis
The standard form is:
- genus capitalized
- epithet lowercase
- both italicized
When italics are not available, such as on a handwritten field label, the two words may traditionally be underlined separately.
After the First Mention
After writing the full name once, the genus may often be abbreviated:
Calendula officinalis C. officinalis
Do this only when the abbreviated genus remains unambiguous.
If the same paragraph discusses:
- Calendula officinalis
- Chamaemelum nobile
- Chamomilla recutita
then C. officinalis may create more trouble than it saves.
Botanical brevity should not become botanical hide-and-seek.
The Name Is Not Complete for Herbal Work
For a taxonomist, the species name may answer the immediate naming question.
For an herbalist, we usually need more.
Compare:
Urtica dioica
with:
Urtica dioica L., leaf
and:
Urtica dioica L., root
Those are not interchangeable herbal materials.
The botanical name identifies the species.
The plant part identifies what material is being used.
A useful herbal label should include at least:
- botanical name
- plant part
- preparation
- strength or ratio where relevant
For example:
Urtica dioica L. — dried leaf
or:
Urtica dioica L. — root tincture, 1:5, 45% ethanol
The Latin does not complete the herbal description.
It prevents the description from beginning with the wrong plant.
What Does the “L.” Mean?
Many plant names contain an additional abbreviation:
Calendula officinalis L.
Prunella vulgaris L.
Urtica dioica L.
The L. refers to Carl Linnaeus, who validly published those names.
It is called the author or authority citation.
The author citation:
- is not italicized
- does not mean Linnaeus discovered the plant
- does not mean he was the first human to know or use it
- identifies the nomenclatural publication of that scientific name
IPNI provides standardized information about plant names, including spelling, authors, publication details and type information. IPNI also notes that the author citation is conventionally associated with the name but is not itself part of the botanical name under the Code.
Why Include the Author?
In ordinary beginner writing, the author abbreviation is not always necessary after every mention.
It becomes useful when:
- distinguishing similar or historically confused names
- checking a monograph
- verifying a label
- working with synonyms
- searching botanical databases
- creating a formal materia medica entry
For WholeRoot profiles, we can include the author in the identity section and then use the shorter species name throughout the article.
Why Are Some Authors in Parentheses?
Consider:
Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f.
The parentheses tell a story.
The author inside the parentheses originally published the epithet in a different genus or rank.
The author outside the parentheses later published the new combination.
Kew currently accepts the name Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f. and records that form in its taxonomic entry.
In simplified terms:
- L. first published the epithet
- Burm.f. later placed it in the genus Aloe
You do not need to memorize author abbreviations to begin herbalism.
You only need to recognize that the brackets are not decorative punctuation accidentally spilled onto the label.
They show nomenclatural history.
Family Names
Above the genus sits the botanical family.
Examples:
- Prunella vulgaris belongs to Lamiaceae
- Calendula officinalis belongs to Asteraceae
- Urtica dioica belongs to Urticaceae
- Althaea officinalis belongs to Malvaceae
Family names:
- begin with a capital letter
- are not normally italicized
- commonly end in -aceae
Plant families can provide useful clues about:
- flower structure
- leaf arrangement
- fruit type
- chemistry
- identification features
- possible allergy relationships
But family membership does not make every member interchangeable.
Asteraceae contains:
- chamomile
- calendula
- dandelion
- yarrow
- lettuce
- ragweed
- many other plants
They share evolutionary relationships.
They do not share one universal preparation or safety profile.
Knowing the family is useful context.
It is not permission to substitute cousins.
What “officinalis” Means
Herbal students quickly notice the epithet:
officinalis
Examples include:
- Calendula officinalis
- Melissa officinalis
- Althaea officinalis
- Salvia officinalis
Historically, officinalis often points toward a plant’s association with an apothecary, workshop or recognized medicinal use.
It does not mean:
- scientifically proven for every traditional claim
- safe in every form
- suitable for everyone
- currently accepted as medicine everywhere
- interchangeable with every other officinalis
It is part of a name.
It may offer historical context.
It is not a regulatory approval stamp issued by ancient Latin.
Descriptive Epithets
Specific epithets sometimes provide clues.
Examples:
vulgaris
Common or ordinary.
Prunella vulgaris
dioica
Refers to male and female reproductive structures occurring on separate plants in the typical botanical usage.
Urtica dioica
alba
White.
nigra
Black or dark.
arvensis
Associated with cultivated fields.
montana
Associated with mountains.
palustris
Associated with marshy places.
lanceolata
Lance-shaped, often referring to leaves.
Plantago lanceolata
These meanings can help memory.
They are not sufficient for identification.
A plant called alba is not identified merely because one part appears white.
Names can refer to one feature, an old interpretation, a place, a person or historical circumstances that are not immediately visible.
Use the epithet as a clue.
Not as a field-test verdict.
Accepted Names and Synonyms
This is where botanical naming becomes more realistic.
A plant can appear under several scientific names in:
- old books
- research papers
- herb suppliers
- pharmacopoeias
- regional floras
- regulatory monographs
One name may currently be treated as accepted.
Others may be listed as synonyms.
A synonym is not necessarily a foolish or fake name.
It may be:
- an older accepted name
- a name published independently for the same taxon
- the result of placing the species in another genus
- a name used by a different taxonomic authority
- a historical name preserved in medicinal literature
Plants of the World Online provides accepted names, synonyms, distribution and supporting taxonomic information. Its underlying checklist allows users to search an older synonym and reach the currently accepted taxon.
The Chamomile Name Problem
Chamomile gives us a perfect real-world example.
Many herbal books use:
Matricaria recutita L.
Kew’s current taxonomic backbone treats that name as a synonym and accepts:
Matricaria chamomilla L.
Kew also lists:
Chamomilla recutita (L.) Rauschert
as another synonym.
However, the European Medicines Agency’s herbal monograph uses:
Matricaria recutita L., flos
for the medicinal flower material.
Does that mean one source is fraudulent?
No.
It means taxonomy, medicinal standards and historical literature do not always update in perfect synchronization.

- recognize current taxonomy

Different Authorities May Disagree
An accepted name is accepted according to a taxonomic treatment or authority.
Classification is an interpretation of evidence.
Different experts may disagree about whether populations should be treated as:
- one species
- several species
- subspecies
- varieties
- synonyms
- members of another genus
New evidence may come from:
- morphology
- geography
- genetics
- chromosome studies
- reproductive relationships
- historical type material
This is why plant names sometimes change.
The plant did not file for a new identity.
Human understanding changed.
Kew’s checklist may follow one taxonomic treatment while a regional flora follows another.
A medicinal monograph may retain a widely established synonym for continuity.
A good Plant Lab profile should therefore state its naming authority rather than presenting every accepted name as eternal universal truth.
Nomenclature and Taxonomy Are Not the Same
These words are related but different.
Taxonomy
Taxonomy concerns how organisms are:
- identified
- described
- compared
- classified
- grouped
A taxonomist may decide that two named groups belong to one species—or that one species should be divided.
Nomenclature
Nomenclature concerns the rules used to name those groups.
It addresses issues such as:
- valid publication
- priority
- name formation
- type specimens
- author citations
- legitimate and illegitimate names
In simple terms:
Taxonomy decides what groups we recognize. Nomenclature determines what those groups are called under the rules.
The rules cannot force every taxonomist to agree on the groups.
They help determine which name applies once a particular treatment is chosen.
The Type Specimen
A botanical name is anchored to a type.
For species, this is commonly a preserved specimen, although the rules include several type categories and historical complications.
The type is not necessarily:
- the most typical-looking plant
- the healthiest specimen
- the only specimen examined
- the original plant still growing in the wild
It is the permanent reference that fixes the application of the name.
RHS describes type specimens as reference points used to determine the correct application of scientific plant names.
This matters when botanists disagree about what an old name refers to.
They can return to:
- the original publication
- the description
- the designated type material
Botanical naming is therefore tied to physical evidence.
Somewhere, a pressed plant may be holding together an argument involving several centuries of experts.
No pressure.
Subspecies
A name may include:
subsp.

A subspecies is a formally recognized subdivision within a species.
Formatting:
- genus and species italicized
- subsp. not italicized
- subspecies epithet italicized
Kew currently recognizes Prunella vulgaris subsp. vulgaris and records its presence in Iceland among many other regions.
A subspecies may be associated with differences involving:
- geography
- morphology
- ecology
- genetic pattern
Not every variation deserves subspecies rank.
That is a taxonomic judgment.
Botanical Variety
A botanical variety is written:
var.
Example form:
Species name var. variety-name
Formatting:
- var. is not italicized
- the variety epithet is italicized
A botanical variety is a naturally occurring taxonomic rank below species.
It is not automatically the same as a cultivated variety sold in a garden center.
This distinction matters because gardeners often use variety casually when the correct formal word is cultivar.
Forma
A botanical form may be written:
f.
It is a lower taxonomic rank sometimes used for relatively minor variations, such as a color form.
Example structure:
Species name f. form-name
Forma is less commonly relevant in everyday herbal work, but it may appear in botanical records and older texts.
A differently colored flower does not automatically mean a different medicinal plant.
It may be:
- ordinary variation
- a named form
- a cultivar
- a different species
The name and evidence must be checked.
Cultivars
A cultivar is a cultivated selection maintained for particular characteristics.
Examples of selected traits may include:
- flower color
- size
- flavor
- yield
- growth habit
- disease resistance
- chemical profile
Cultivar names are written in single quotation marks and are not italicized.
Example format:
Mentha ‘Chocolate’
or:
Genus species ‘Cultivar Name’
The cultivar name:
- begins with a capital letter
- is not italicized
- appears in single quotation marks
Cultivated plants are governed by a related but separate naming code, the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants. Registration authorities help promote stability and avoid duplicate cultivar names.
Why Cultivars Matter in Herbalism
Cultivars can differ in:
- scent
- flavor
- flower structure
- oil composition
- growth
- yield
A garden cultivar may be perfectly suitable for:
- observation
- pollinator value
- culinary use
- a traditional preparation
But we should not assume every cultivar has the same chemical profile or evidence as the wild-type material used in a monograph.
The cultivar name belongs on the record when known.
Hybrids
The multiplication sign:

may indicate a hybrid.
Example:
Mentha × piperita
Peppermint is commonly written with the hybrid sign because it is a hybrid taxon.
The × is not the letter x.
It may appear:
- before the epithet for an interspecific hybrid
- before a genus name in an intergeneric hybrid
Hybrids are not automatically inferior, unnatural or unsuitable.
Many familiar cultivated plants are hybrids.
The symbol tells us something important about origin and naming.
When typing tools are limited, a lowercase x is sometimes substituted, but the multiplication sign is the preferred botanical form.
“sp.” and “spp.”
These abbreviations are useful when the exact species is not specified.
sp.
One unidentified or unspecified species within a genus.
Thymus sp.
Meaning:
One species of Thymus, exact species not stated.
spp.
More than one species within a genus.
Thymus spp.
Meaning:
Multiple species of Thymus.
The genus is italicized.
sp. and spp. are not.
Why This Matters
A label saying:
Thymus spp.
does not identify one exact species.
That may be acceptable in a broad ecological discussion.
It is less satisfactory when:
- the product is concentrated
- species differ meaningfully
- evidence concerns one species
- safety varies
- the user needs traceability
“Various thyme species” is information.
It is not precise identity.
“cf.” and Identification Uncertainty
Botanical field notes may use:
cf.
This comes from a word meaning compare.
A notation such as:
Plantago cf. lanceolata
suggests that the specimen resembles Plantago lanceolata, but the identification is not fully confirmed.
This is useful scientific honesty.
It is not an appropriate label for something being prepared internally.
If the identification is still “compare with,” the plant can wait outside the teapot.
Common Names Still Matter
After all this Latin excitement, we should not throw common names into the compost.
Common names carry:
- language
- culture
- local knowledge
- history
- sensory relationship
- memory
- accessibility
Blákolla may carry meaning that Prunella vulgaris does not.
Morgunfrú may feel more alive than Calendula officinalis.
Brenninetla immediately tells an Icelandic speaker something about the encounter.
We should use both.

The botanical name creates international precision.
The common name preserves human relationship.
We do not need to sacrifice either.
Why Common Names Can Be Dangerous
Problems arise when the common name is treated as sufficient identity.
The name chamomile may refer to:
- Matricaria chamomilla
- Chamaemelum nobile
- other related or unrelated plants using chamomile-like common names
German chamomile and Roman chamomile have overlapping traditions, but they are different species.
They should not be collapsed into one invisible generic flower.
Similarly, regional plant names may be reused for species with very different safety profiles.
A common name is a clue.
It is not a voucher redeemable for one guaranteed species.
A Latin Name Is Not Proof of Quality
A supplier can print:
Melissa officinalis
on a label and still sell material that is:
- old
- weak
- contaminated
- poorly stored
- incorrectly harvested
- the wrong plant part
- substituted
- falsely labeled
The presence of italics does not guarantee authenticity.
A botanical name is one quality marker.
It should be combined with:
- plant part
- source
- batch information
- preparation
- testing
- sensory quality
- supplier transparency
Scientific typography can be correct while the jar remains disappointing.
Fraud also knows how to use italics.
The Medicinal-Name Problem
Medicinal plant literature often preserves older names because:
- monographs were published under them
- pharmacopoeial continuity matters
- products are already registered
- practitioners recognize the traditional term
- taxonomic databases update at different times
This means a researcher may need to search several names.

Searching only one name may miss relevant literature.

to determine:
- names used in medicinal materials
- exact plant part
- preparation terminology

A global database may tell you a species occurs in Iceland.
A good Icelandic flora helps you identify the specimen standing in front of you.
A Reliable Name-Checking Workflow
When you encounter an unfamiliar herbal name:
Step 1: Copy the Name Exactly
Include:
- capitalization
- spelling
- author abbreviation
- subspecies or variety
- cultivar
- plant part
Do not silently correct it yet.
The mistake may itself be useful information.
Step 2: Search a Current Taxonomic Source
Check:

- Single ingredient or blend?

A stronger label might say:

Now we can begin comparing the product with evidence.
The more precise label does not prove effectiveness.
It makes evaluation possible.

Do not avoid botanical names because you fear pronouncing them incorrectly.
Say the name.
Learn.
Adjust.
The calendula will not file a complaint.
Names Can Carry History and Power
Scientific naming is not culturally neutral.
Names may reflect:
- colonial exploration
- European publishing systems
- collectors
- patrons
- places renamed through political power
- people who were credited while local knowledge holders were ignored
The international naming system is useful.
That does not mean its history should be romanticized.
A scientific name may create global precision while failing to preserve:

Look at a plant label and ask:
- Is the genus present?
- Is the species epithet present?
- Is the spelling correct?
- Is the genus capitalized?
- Is the epithet lowercase?
- Are both italicized?
- Is the plant part stated?
- Is the name currently accepted or a synonym?
- Is the medicinal literature indexed under another name?
- Does the physical material actually match the label?
A label can pass the formatting test and fail the identity test.
Both matter.
Your First Latin Session
Choose one plant already in your cupboard.
Write down exactly what the package says.
Then find:
- accepted botanical name
- important synonyms
- family
- author abbreviation
- plant part
- preparation
- source database
- date checked

Remaining Question
Does the supplier identify the species on the original packaging?
That final question matters.
Researching a likely species cannot add missing traceability to the product after purchase.
The WholeRoot Naming Standard
WholeRootLabs will:
- use a current accepted botanical name
- state the authority used
- include important medicinal synonyms
- include common names
- identify the plant family
- identify the plant part
- identify subspecies, variety, hybrid or cultivar where relevant
- preserve local names where they add meaningful context
- search important synonyms when reviewing evidence
- avoid treating taxonomy as eternally settled
- correct names when reliable taxonomy changes
- keep old URLs redirected when article titles change
- avoid creating duplicate plant profiles under synonyms
WholeRootLabs will not:
- use Latin names as decorative credibility
- copy misspelled botanical names from suppliers
- assume a common name identifies one species
- treat a synonym as a completely separate plant without investigation
- remove traditional names merely because they are not scientific
- imply that a taxonomic database has verified the herb inside a commercial capsule
- recommend wild use from a name match alone
Start With the Name—Then Meet the Plant
A botanical name is powerful because it narrows the question.
It can lead us toward:
- the correct literature
- the correct family
- the correct synonyms
- the correct monograph
- the correct regional flora
- the correct plant part
But the name is not the plant.
The plant remains:
- rooted in a habitat
- variable
- seasonal
- chemically responsive to its environment
- known by communities
- capable of being confused with something else
- transformed by preparation
The name is the address.
It is not the house, the inhabitants or what they are cooking inside.
Learn the address.
Check that you arrived at the correct place.
Then begin the relationship.
