  • animal research
  • observational evidence
  • human trials
  • systematic reviews
  • regulatory monographs
  • personal experience

4. The Claim

What someone says the preparation will do:

  • support ordinary comfort
  • influence one measured outcome
  • reduce a symptom
  • treat a diagnosed condition
  • prevent disease
  • cure disease
  • transform the whole person

These four layers must match.

A traditional record concerning a mild water infusion does not automatically support a strong claim about a concentrated extract.

A laboratory experiment on isolated cells does not establish that drinking the plant produces the same result in a human body.

A small clinical trial on one proprietary product does not validate every product containing the same common name.

A testimonial does not establish that the herb caused the outcome.

Most exaggeration enters through a gap between these layers.

The label says plant.

The study tested product.

The advertisement promises outcome.

The customer receives uncertainty.

What Herbal Medicine Actually Is

Herbal medicine is not one unified object.

It can refer to:

The phrase:

It is natural, so it cannot hurt you

weakens herbal medicine.

It suggests that plants have no meaningful power.

A better position is:

The Second Form of Hype: “If It Worked, It Would Be a Drug”

This claim sounds scientific.

It is not a useful general rule.

Some plant preparations have been investigated extensively.

Others have not.

Research may be limited because of:

  • difficulty standardizing a complex plant material
  • limited commercial incentive
  • variation between preparations
  • poor study design
  • lack of research infrastructure
  • uncertainty about which constituents matter
  • challenges reproducing traditional practice in a trial

None of those possibilities proves that a traditional use is effective.

They do mean that absence of strong evidence and evidence of no effect are different conclusions.

A plant may remain uncertain because the evidence is weak, inconsistent or mismatched to the preparation.

The honest conclusion is then:

We do not know enough.

Not:

Ancient wisdom has been proven.

And not:

The plant is obviously useless.

Uncertainty is not a victory for either side.

The Third Form of Hype: “Used for Centuries”

Historical duration can be meaningful.

It may tell us:

  • a plant had cultural importance
  • a use was repeated across generations
  • a preparation was considered valuable
  • communities developed methods and cautions
  • the plant deserves investigation

It does not automatically tell us:

  • how often the preparation worked
  • how failures were recorded
  • whether rare harms were noticed
  • whether the historical condition matches a modern diagnosis
  • whether the original plant material matches today’s product
  • whether current medicines alter the risk
  • whether the tradition was transmitted accurately

In the European Union, the regulatory category of traditional herbal medicinal use is distinct from well-established medicinal use. Traditional-use registration relies on a documented history of medicinal use under defined conditions, including at least 30 years of use and at least 15 years within the EU; it is not the same as demonstrating strong modern clinical efficacy.

That distinction is useful far beyond regulation.

Traditional use is evidence of tradition.

It may also contribute information about plausibility and patterns of use.

It should not be quietly relabeled as proof of effectiveness.

The Fourth Form of Hype: “Science Proves Ancient Wisdom”

Sometimes research supports an old use.

That is interesting.

But the sentence often hides several unanswered questions.

Did the researchers study:

  • the same species?
  • the same plant part?
  • the same preparation?
  • the same dose?
  • the same reason for use?
  • the same population?
  • the same duration?

Imagine a historical record describing a flower infusion.

That result deserves to be described accurately.

The existence of a study is not the end of evaluation.

  • Was the outcome meaningful?

A study can be real and still be:

  • preliminary
  • underpowered
  • poorly controlled
  • irrelevant to the advertised use

  • unable to establish long-term safety

The words clinically researched may mean anything from one small trial to a substantial evidence base.

Read beyond the adjective.

Laboratory Findings Are Not Human Outcomes

A plant extract may affect:

  • cells in a dish
  • isolated enzymes
  • microbes in a laboratory
  • chemical reactions
  • animal models

These findings can help identify:

  • possible mechanisms
  • compounds worth studying
  • safety signals
  • research directions

But the human body introduces additional questions:

  • Is that concentration realistically achievable?

A substance killing cells in a laboratory does not automatically mean a tea treats disease.

At a sufficient concentration, many ordinary substances can damage cells.

The question is not simply whether an effect exists.

Personal Experience Is Real—and Limited

Someone drinks a tea and sleeps better.

That experience is real.

But several explanations may remain possible:

Personal experience can help answer:

  • Is the taste acceptable?
  • Did anything unexpected happen?

It cannot establish that the same result will occur for everyone.

The Product Is Not the Plant

A plant grows in soil.

A product moves through:

  • drying
  • transport
  • storage
  • grinding
  • extraction
  • concentration
  • blending
  • manufacturing
  • packaging

At each stage, something can change.

The final product may be influenced by:

  • species authenticity
  • plant part
  • harvest timing

  • pesticides
  • heavy metals

The same common name on two bottles does not guarantee identical contents.

NCCIH notes that supplements sold in shops or online may differ in important ways from products used in research. NIH guidance for botanical research therefore emphasizes complete taxonomic identification, source information and detailed characterization of the tested material.

This is not a minor technical issue.

If the product is poorly identified, the evidence cannot follow it reliably.

“Standardized” Does Not Mean Universally Proven

Standardization usually means that selected chemical markers are measured and adjusted to improve batch consistency.

That can be useful.

It may help researchers and manufacturers compare products.

But several questions remain:

  • Why was that marker selected?
  • Is it known to produce the desired effect?
  • Is it simply easy to measure?
  • What happens to the rest of the plant profile?
  • Does standardizing one constituent make the whole product clinically consistent?
  • Does the label define what was standardized?

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that the chosen marker would ideally be related to biological effect, but this is not always established. It also notes that the term standardized does not have one legal or regulatory definition in the United States.

Standardization may improve consistency.

It does not automatically establish effectiveness, purity or superiority.

A standardized disappointment remains standardized.

Regulation Is Not One Global System

The word supplement does not mean the same regulatory pathway in every country.

In the United States, dietary supplements generally do not undergo FDA premarket approval for safety and effectiveness in the same manner as medicines. Manufacturers are responsible for safety and labeling before marketing, while much FDA enforcement occurs after products reach the market.

In the European Union, some herbal products may be regulated as herbal medicinal products through pathways involving well-established or traditional use, with EMA herbal monographs summarizing defined substances, preparations, uses and safety conditions.

This means a consumer should not assume:

  • a product was tested because it is sold
  • a product was untested because it is herbal
  • every product in a pharmacy followed the same pathway
  • every traditional registration proves strong clinical efficacy
  • every supplement label guarantees quality

The practical question is:

What regulatory category does this exact product belong to, and what does that category actually require?

A logo, shop location or professional-looking package cannot answer that by itself.

Institutions Can Fail Without Every Warning Being False

It is reasonable to examine:

  • commercial influence
  • regulatory weaknesses
  • conflicts of interest
  • restricted research priorities
  • inaccessible care
  • excessive medicalization
  • poor recognition of traditional knowledge
  • treatments aimed at symptoms while conditions remain unchanged

Critical thinking should apply to institutions.

It should also apply to people selling their opposition to institutions.

Distrust can become a market.

A seller may say:

  • doctors do not want you to know this
  • regulators are trying to suppress the plant
  • the absence of evidence proves censorship

  • only independent healers understand the truth
  • any warning is pharmaceutical propaganda

Sometimes institutions deserve criticism.

That fact does not make every contrarian claim correct.

Commercial Herbalism Is Still Commercial

A product does not become ethically pure because the package uses:

Small companies can make excellent products.

Large companies can make poor products.

The reverse can also occur.

  • Are claims proportional to evidence?
  • Are warnings specific?
  • Is testing described?

Authenticity cannot be verified through typography.

The Affiliate Problem

Affiliate income can support educational work.

It can also distort it.

The distortion may be subtle.

A writer begins by recommending a useful product.

Later, products that generate commission receive:

  • more attention

  • better placement
  • fewer cautions
